Next-Generation Myopia Control for Children
Slow the progression of nearsightedness in your child with personalized Pediatric Myopia Management strategies designed for long-term health.
If you’ve noticed your child squinting at the TV or struggling to see the board at school, they may be developing myopia, or nearsightedness. While glasses can clear their vision today, they don’t stop the eye from growing longer, which is the root cause of worsening prescriptions. At Stam & Associates Eye Care, we offer Pediatric Myopia Management—a proactive clinical program designed to “slow down the blur.” Our goal is to reduce the final prescription your child ends up with, which significantly lowers their risk of retinal issues later in life.
The “Guardian” archetype of our practice focuses on early intervention. Modern children spend more time on digital devices and less time outdoors, which has led to a global surge in myopia. We utilize specialized treatments, such as peripheral defocus lenses or specific eye drops, that signal the eye to stop over-elongating. This isn’t just about avoiding thick glasses; it’s about protecting the structural integrity of your child’s eyes. By managing their vision now, we are preventing future complications like myopic maculopathy or early-onset glaucoma.
Dr. Stam and our team make the process easy for both parents and kids. We take the time to explain the “why” behind our recommendations, ensuring your child feels empowered in their vision journey. Our Jacksonville office is a “low-stress” environment where we prioritize comfort alongside clinical accuracy. Whether your child is an athlete who needs the freedom of specialized contact lenses or a student who needs the latest in myopia-control glasses, we provide a customized roadmap for their visual development.
What is the ideal age to start a myopia management program?
Clinical studies show that intervention is most effective when started as soon as myopia is diagnosed, typically between the ages of 6 and 12. The earlier we start, the more “room” we have to slow down the changes before the eye finishes growing. Even if your child already wears glasses, it’s never too late to start a program that protects their future vision.
Are myopia control contact lenses safe for active children?
Modern myopia control lenses are designed with high-oxygen materials and are specifically FDA-approved for safety in pediatric populations. Many of our young patients find them much easier to use than glasses during sports or dance. We’ll spend all the time your child needs to make sure they are a “pro” at putting them in and taking them out.
Does myopia management guarantee my child won’t need glasses as an adult?
While the goal is to significantly reduce the progression of nearsightedness, most patients will still require a mild prescription for optimal clarity. Think of it like wearing braces: it corrects the major issues now so the end result is much more manageable. Our main goal is to keep their prescription low enough to avoid serious eye health risks in their 40s and 50s.
