Advanced Medical Eye Care & Disease Management
Protect your vision from chronic conditions with a comprehensive Diabetic Vitreoretinal Evaluation and state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging.
Vision loss from chronic diseases like diabetes or glaucoma is often preventable, but it requires a proactive clinical approach. At Stam & Associates Eye Care, we go beyond the “which is better, one or two” refraction. We provide Advanced Medical Eye Care that focuses on the health of your internal ocular structures. For our neighbors managing blood sugar issues, a yearly Diabetic Vitreoretinal Evaluation is the single most important step in preventing diabetic retinopathy. This condition can damage the delicate blood vessels in the retina long before you notice a change in your sight.
Dr. Bryan Stam utilizes high-definition retinal imaging and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to see beneath the surface of the eye. This allows us to detect micro-aneurysms, hemorrhages, or early signs of macular degeneration that a standard exam might miss. Early detection is the “Specialist” advantage; it allows us to coordinate with your primary care physician to manage your systemic health more effectively. Whether we are monitoring internal eye pressure for glaucoma or assessing the health of your optic nerve, our goal is to catch issues while they are still highly treatable.
Chronic conditions like Ocular Surface Disease (Dry Eye) also fall under our medical management umbrella. We don’t just suggest over-the-counter drops; we investigate the root cause of your discomfort. By treating the eye as a complex medical organ rather than just a lens, we provide “Compassionate Visual Solutions” that preserve your quality of life as you age. Your vision is your most precious sense, and our Jacksonville clinic is equipped with the hospital-grade technology necessary to keep it sharp for a lifetime.
Why is a dilated exam necessary for patients with diabetes?
Dilation allows the optometrist to view the peripheral retina and vitreous more clearly, enabling detection of early signs of vascular leakage or retinal detachment. It’s the only way to get a “full house” view of what’s happening in the back of your eye, which is where diabetes shows up first. We’ll make sure you have some stylish disposable shades for the walk back to your car afterward!
How often should I have a medical eye exam if I have high blood pressure?
Patients with hypertension should undergo a medical ocular evaluation at least once per year to monitor for signs of hypertensive retinopathy. High blood pressure can affect the tiny vessels in your eyes just like it affects your heart. We coordinate closely with your GP, so if we see changes, we can help you get your numbers back where they belong.
Does medical eye care cost more than a standard vision exam?
Medical eye evaluations are often covered under your major medical insurance rather than your vision insurance plan, depending on the diagnosis and clinical findings. We’ll do a thorough “benefits check” before your appointment so you aren’t surprised by any costs. Our team is great at helping you navigate your coverage to get the most out of your insurance.
